Academic group home faces opposition in Brentwood

See comments or lack there of from our alderman about the Boys Hope Girls Hope moving into Ward 3 in Brentwood. Please call your alderman and tell them it would be good for our community as otherwise it will be another negative report about our city. The vote will be August 5th at 7PM at city Hall

From the Post Dispatch By Doug Moore dmoore@post-dispatch.com 314-340-8125 Comment or lack of by our Alderman, the Mayor and School District.

Alderman Keith Robertson, who represents the 3rd Ward, where the project would be built, calls the home “a good fit for the neighborhood,” potentially serving as a buffer to commercial development along nearby Brentwood Boulevard.

Alderman Patrick Toohey also supports the project. He said he has talked with members of the Board of Adjustment and the Planning and Zoning Commission. Both bodies of government have recommended the project.

“I don’t see any reason to vote down the recommendations,” Toohey said.

Andrew G. Leahy, who also represents the 3rd Ward, said last week in an email that his “comments now might be just speculation on future actions.”

Alderman Lee Wynn said he has visited the girls’ home in Kirkwood and is impressed, but he is still collecting more information. “I like (the project) in Brentwood. I just don’t know whether Madge is the best place,” Wynn said.

Alderman Thomas E. Kramer responded by email with a “no comment.” The other three aldermen, Anthony Harper, Cindy Manestar and Maureen Saunders, did not respond to phone and email messages seeking comment.

Joan Oakley, assistant superintendent of Brentwood School District, said the district has taken a neutral position on Boys Hope moving into the city. But for a district of 782 students, adding up to 10 more “is not a problem,” Oakley said.

Brentwood Mayor Pat Kelly supports the project and hopes the Board of Aldermen will too. He said a fear of change is typical, and his city has seen that in other developments, from Brentwood Square to a Starbucks.
