Brentwood Residents Form Community Emergency Response Team

The program was created by the Brentwood police and fire departments.

The Brentwood and partnered with community members to create the city's first Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Eleven residents were recognized during Monday's Brentwood Board of Aldermen meeting for graduating from the CERT program.

"It teaches people how to deal with a disaster," said Maj. Dan Fitzgerald, assistant chief of the Brentwood Police Department. "What these folks here are doing is making a commitment to community."

Fitzgerald said that the residents could be called upon to assist during natural disasters. The CERT class also helped direct traffic during last weekend, which freed up the time of Brentwood police officers.

The 20-hour program was spread over five days. Three public safety officers led the course: firefighters Matt Stoverink and Rick Kerr, and police officer Matt Morgan.
