Las Vegas Man Faces Stealing Offense After Scamming Maplewood Bicycle Shop, Police Say

Charles Chapman also had stealing offenses in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Washington, Maplewood Police said.

A Las Vegas man was faces a felony stealing charge after trying to scam a Maplewood bike shop, police said.

Charles Chapman, 42, of Las Vegas, was charged Feb. 26 with stealing as a third offense within 10 years. Chapman has pleaded guilty to two counts of theft in Pennsylvania, one count of retail fraud in Michigan and shoplifting in Yakima, WA.

Maplewood Police said Chapman took several bottles of chamois cream off a shelf and brought them up to the counter at Maplwood Bicycle, 7534 Manchester Road, on July 7, 2011. He claimed he was returning the merchandise.

Police said he aggressively argued with the cashier to give him a refund, claiming a manager approved the refund. The clerk gave him a refund.

Police said the clerk identified Chapman in a photo lineup.

Bond was set at $5,000 for Chapman.
