Man Leads Maplewood Police on High-Speed Chase into Shrewsbury

Police said they had been dispatched to check on thefts from cars in the area, and spotted a recently stolen car driven by the defendant.

A man driving a stolen car led Maplewood Police on a high-speed chase through a residential neighborhood and past businesses at 1:10 a.m. Monday before he struck a street sign on Arlington Avenue in Shrewsbury.

Officers had been dispatched to the 7300 block of Maple Avenue in Maplewood when they spotted a car driving from an area where thefts were reported. When they activated their emergency lights, the car sped off.

The chase went from Marshall Avenue near Maple to Arlington Avenue near Shrewsbury Avenue, Maplewood Police said in a report.

After hitting the street sign, the driver fled on foot and was caught in a nearby garage, police said.

Allen Wallace, 18, of the 2900 block of Thomas Street in St. Louis, was charged with stealing a car and resisting arrest, creating a substantial risk of injury or death.

Police said the 1995 Honda Accord was stolen in the 3100 block of Edgar Drive in Maplewood just minutes before officers spotted the car.

Maplewood Police Sgt. Matt Nighbor said Wallace had stolen items from at least 10 cars in the area near Edgar Drive before he stole the car. All were unlocked.

Wallace is being held in St. Louis County jail. Bail was set at $15,000.
