Maplewood Walmart Cashiers Scammed Into Handing Over Hundreds

The suspect confused the cashiers as he bought a bottle of water.

Jeffrey Brown, 47, of the 4200 block of Cote Brilliante Avenue West, paid for a single bottle of water with a $100 at Walmart, in Maplewood Commons, and managed to walk out with almost $1,000 according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The two incidents occurred between May 12 and July 7. After the July incident, a cashier told Maplewood police Det. Adam Fite that Brown gave her a $100 bill to pay for a bottle of water, and then confused her as she was making change for it by giving her additional bills and asking her to break those bills into smaller bills, according to court documents.

He was charged on Tuesday by St. Louis County prosecuters with stealing more than $500.
