Victim Fights With Thief Through Broken Window as Stolen Truck Barrels Down Highway 40

The truck owner saw the truck leaving the Maplewood Commons parking lot, and jumped into the bed before it sped north.

A pickup truck was stolen Thursday around noon from the Maplewood Commons shopping center with the owner in the truck bed.

Maplewood Police report that as the truck's owner was walking out of the business, the owner saw the truck leaving the parking lot.

The victim chased the truck around the parking lot then jumped into the bed of the truck.

The suspect drove north on Hanley Road and east on Highway 40. The owner broke out the back window of the truck and tried to force the suspect to stop, as the truck was going over the speed limit.

The suspect then slowed and stopped on the shoulder of the highway. Both the suspect and the victim got out. The victim received minor injuries, then the suspect got back in the truck and drove away, going east on Highway 40.

The victim described the suspect as a black man approximately 22 years of age, about 5-foot-8, weighing about 145 pounds, with short dark hair in braids and no facial hair. The suspect was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.

At this time, police are searching for a maroon 1992 GMC Sierra extended cab with MO Plate 1HN-375 (the vehicle has been entered as stolen). The front fenders and part of the front doors are white. The hood of the vehicle is a darker burgundy color than the rest of the truck. The rear sliding glass window is broken out.
