2011-12 Maplewood Budget, By the Numbers

The city's proposed budget calls for street improvements, new police cars and a whole lot of salt.

Once Maplewood City Council offers final approval of this fiscal year's budget, city staff may make preparations to buy new equipment, send council members to training conferences and upgrade streets, among other items.

City council met with staff during a budget workshop on Tuesday. Here are a few of the highlights from the proposed 2011-12 budget:

  • $700,000 for street construction
  • $6,000 for six iPads or two notebook computers for city council members
  • $81,500 for recycling services
  • $362,000 for trash services
  • $19,000 for four city council conferences in Kansas City, Jefferson City, Phoenix and Washington, D.C.
  • $75,000 in computer equipment and software (mostly new accounting software)
  • $350,000 to pay for legal counsel
  • $342,000 to pay for Maplewood's share of East Central Dispatch Center
  • $42,500 in snow removal salt
  • $145,000 for street lights
  • $385,000 to expand the  
  • $650,000 to ($455,000 will be reimbursed by the federal government). 
  • $850 for a taser
  • $50,000 for two police cars
  • $38,570 for an annual payment for a new EMS vehicle

The budget cycle started on July 1 and ends next June. Council is scheduled to vote on the budget during its July 12 meeting. The budget doesn't call for a higher property tax rate in 2011-12.
