Alderman Leahy Calls for Two-Year Terms

Less than a year after Brentwood voters approved the extension of aldermanic terms from two to four years, Ward 3 Alderman Andrew Leahy seeks a change.

The following was submitted by Ward 3 Alderman Andrew Leahy. It was originally shared with the Brentwood Board of Aldermen. The board is scheduled to vote on this bill during a special meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday at the . The board previously voted to send term extensions to the voters. Leahy voted against the measure.

Elected officials,

Yesterday I requested that the City Administrator draft a bill to return the length of term of office for ALL elected officials back to two years. I wish to offer the Board the opportunity to allow the voters of Brentwood to reconsider . This bill should be on the agenda for the special Board meeting on the Aug. 22 meeting at the Rec Center. This action can be dealt with in open session before the executive session.

I truly believe that this board should be responsive enough to our community to allow them to reconsider how often we should come before them for review. If this bill is passed on Monday, it could be submitted to the voters on the Nov. 2011 ballot.

I truly believe that the two year terms of office is in the BEST interest of this City. I am submitting this email to provide you with notice that I am taking this action and ask for your consideration and support. If you wish to co-sponsor this bill please contact Bola.

As I understand the process; IF the bill passes the Board on Monday the 22 and is submitted to the by Aug. 30 this issue would be on the November ballot. The result of the election would be effective with the April 2012 election.

This would allow the voting cycle to remain as it currently is or IF the voters change the terms back to two years then the even year side of the room would stand for election in 2012, 2014 and 2016 and the odd year would stand for election in 2015 and 2017.

It is my hope that this action shows the citizens of Brentwood that we the elected officials are RESPONSIVE and ACCOUNTABLE to them.

Bola, please include a copy of this email in the minutes of this up coming meeting in compliance to the sunshine laws.

Thank you.

Andy Leahy
