“I just do volunteer; it’s part of what I do. It’s that simple,” he said.

On March 10, a robocall survey went out to Ward 1, asking residents if they approved of the city’s handling of the state audit. Some thought the survey put the city in a more favorable light than appropriate, and let Kelly know about it in .

Many also wondered who paid for the robocalls and wrote the questions. Kelly said he did both.

“As an elected official, I like to know what the pulse of the city is,” he said. He said anyone could do what he did and hire the polling company.

On went out to Ward 1, and this time the questions were about individuals, not the city.

Patch asked Kelly after the board of aldermen meeting on the eve of the election if he was aware of the second round of robocalls.

“Not until one of the candidates called me and told me,” he said. He said he received the robocall on March 10, but didn’t get the March 24 call.

Patch called Kelly last week to ask about the second round of calls, but never got through. At the meeting, Kelly said it was his prerogative not to return the calls.

The other contested seat is in Ward 4.

Incumbent is up against and Patrick Toohey.

Krewson has been alderwoman since 2004. She worked for the city of Brentwood 30 years before retiring.

Bierman was an alderman in the 1980s, then lived in the city, and has moved back. He lost an aldermanic election to Krewson in 2010 and now is running again.

He’s running because, “with the turmoil that has occurred at City Hall, I think it would be helpful, providing new oversight. A new set of eyes,” he said.

Toohey got into the race, but couldn’t devote time to campaigning because of the time his occupation takes. Toohey declined to be interviewed.
