Brentwood Public Officials Sworn In; Rec Complex Discussed

A bond request that would pay for a renovated Brentwood Recreation Complex was sent to the Ways and Means Committee for additional review.

Following the to renovate and expand the two weeks ago, the Board of Aldermen decided Monday night to send the recommended $9 million bond request, which is needed to finance the center’s overhaul, to the Ways and Means Committee for additional review.

“It’s because it has to do with operational costs,” said Ward 3 Alderman Keith Robertson. Mayor Pat Kelly also suggested the board convene for a special meeting to discuss the complex.

The plan would essentially keep the ice rink as is with major operating systems efficiency upgrades, replace meeting rooms with a new workout facility, build a multiuse gymnasium and improve the building’s facade to blend better with and the . The plan also includes upgrades that make the center more walker-friendly and adds seismic bracing so the site can serve as an emergency shelter in time of need.

Ward 4 Alderman Tom Kramer reminded the board “that we have to keep on schedule” for the bond issue to appear on the November 2011 ballot. It must be sent to the by the end of August.

The Ways and Means Committee could meet as early as this week, but a meeting date hasn't been established yet.

New Brentwood Businesses

The board granted approval to the following businesses:

Buffalo Wild Wings will open at 1210 Strassner Drive. The sports-themed restaurant serves wings, alcohol and other American fare and will fill a 6,719-square-foot space. It also will offer an outdoor seating area. The site is currently an undeveloped lot. Construction is expected to begin in June with an anticipated September 2011 opening.

, a child daycare center, received approval to move to 3135 S. Brentwood Blvd. from its location on Manchester Road. The center will expand a site formerly occupied by Country Squire Cleaners. It's expected to move by late June. “We envision that it will better serve our needs down the road in terms of growth and development. We serve a lot of Brentwood families," owner Gale Spiegel said.

Exclusive Building Services will move to 8503 Manchester Road from Kirkwood. The site previously houses a Wonder/Hostess wholesale store. Owner Leo Knese said the site in Brentwood is larger and he expects to move in June. “This building is probably about 20 times the size of what we now have,” Knese said. “We have to do some interior work, put on a new roof and install some planter boxes in front."

Swearing-In of Elected Officials

Mayor Pat Kelly, municipal judge Ron Hill and four aldermen were sworn in during the meeting. All six officials were incumbents and only two faced competition in the .

Ward 1 Alderman Anthony Harper, , Ward 3 Alderman Keith Robertson and Ward 4 Alderman Tom Kramer were all sworn in. Interim City Administrator Ellen Rottjakob swore in everyone except Wynn, who asked other Ward 2 Alderman Mike Marshall to do the honors. Marshall is a former student of Wynn.
