Brentwood Ways & Means Committee Cancels Wednesday’s Meeting

Bond issue for the Rec Complex will be only topic of next meeting. No date set yet.

Discussion of the proposed $9 million bond issue to finance improvements at the Brentwood Recreation Complex has been put on hold, at least temporarily. That’s because the Ways and Means Committee meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, was cancelled due to low turnout from its members.

A new meeting has not yet been scheduled. When the committee does meet again, it will deal only with the bond issue, said Mike Marshall, Ward 2 alderman and chairman of the committee. However, there may also be a meeting for all Brentwood aldermen to attend because “the bond issue affects everyone.”

The city has until the end of August to submit the rec complex bond request to the St. Louis County Elections Board for posting on the November 2011 ballot. If approved by voters, the bond would finance renovations and an expansion of the 36-year-old recreation complex and ice rink. The rink would remain with major aesthetic and operating systems upgrades. However, a multi-purpose gymnasium would be built and the building’s facade would be given a facelift to blend better with city hall and the new firehouse.

City hall locks were also to be discussed at today’s meeting.  “We are thinking about upgrading to a key-card system,” said Marshall. “Initially it would be more expensive, but less expensive in the long haul,” he said.
