Crossing Guard May Soon Help Middle Schoolers at Brentwood and White

The Brentwood School District will pay for the part time position.

Brentwood Middle School students may soon have help crossing Brentwood Boulevard safely in the morning.

The Ways and Means Committee, on Wednesday, approved a crossing guard at the intersection of Brentwood and White avenues in the morning, Brentwood City Administrator Bola Akande said.

"It’s busier than others in our town because the Starbucks and the cleaners (Cardinal Cleaners) get a lot of morning business," Assistant Chief Dan Fitzgerald said.

The guard, after approval from the board of aldermen, would help students cross Brentwood Boulevard from approximately 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.

"We’ve had some problems, at least the parents have observed some problems, with cars leaving White Avenue in a hurry, making turns right or left in front of kids as they’re trying to cross," he said.

No grade school students cross Brentwood Boulevard, because any who live on the east side of the street go to Mark Twain School, east of Brentwood Boulevard.

Fitzgerald said the police department placed signs in the cleaners and in Starbucks to remind people to watch out for crossing children when they leave, especially in the morning. He said both businesses were cooperative.

Akande said the city pays for a part time school crossing guard at another location.
