CVS to Open in October, Nothing Else Certain for Manchester-Big Bend Intersection

QuikTrip would like to move to the corner opposite the new CVS, if they can work through the details. What about the McDonald's that was rumored a while ago?

One thing is a done deal for redevelopment at the intersection of Manchester and Big Bend. CVS Pharmacy hopes to have their doors open by October.

Equipment was delivered to the site on Tuesday, which Maplewood city manager Marty Corcoran assumed is to demolish the existing building. He expects CVS to start construction by early June.

“As far as the city is concerned, they have all the permits they need,” Corcoran said before the city council meeting Monday night.

The CVS development had to be approved by the city twice, because after the first approval, CVS still had to iron out right-of-way issues with the St. Louis County highway department, then Maplewood had to amend the PUD (planned unit development) to OK that change.

What about the QuikTrip move?

The corner opposite the CVS could someday be the new home for the that is now two blocks south, on Big Bend Boulevard. QuikTrip is working on making it happen.

“They put an application in for zoning, and then they withdrew it because they couldn’t do what they wanted to do,” Corcoran said.

He said Maplewood won’t approve zoning before QuikTrip goes through the county highway department approval process.

St. Louis County wants QuikTrip to do something to accommodate the traffic, which they’re not sure they can do, because they would have to give up land to do it. He said at this point, the city doesn’t have an application from QuikTrip for zoning approval.

The Maplewood Richmond Heights School District is against the move, which ignited support both for and against. Read more about the issue on Patch:

A McDonald's next to the CVS?

Ward 3 Councilman Shawn Faulkingham commented on his Facebook page in January that McDonald's , which he said he was "vehemently opposed to."

Is a McDonald's in the works?

"No, not at all," Corcoran said. "We have no other applications for that tract of land, and nobody has contacted us. We’ll see what happens there."
