Waste Reduction Grant Could Mean Better Recycling for Marietta Parking Lot

Maplewood's Public Works Department will submit two applications for a Recycling and Waste Reduction Grant.

Businesses in downtown Maplewood could pay less for trash, recycling and composting services if the city is awarded a grant.

City Council approved a request at Tuesday night's meeting from the Public Works Department to apply for the grant for the services at the Marietta Avenue parking lot.

The application includes two seperate requests. One request, if approved, would cover the cost of recycling and composting for businesses bordering the lot for one year.

The second request would fund construction of an enclosure for grease dumpsters and recycling along the eastern portion of the lot.

Director of Public Works Anthony Traxler estimated costs for the projects at $7,770 and $28,000 respectively in a city memo. Traxler said the city will be required to match funds by 10 percent on anything over $10,000.

City Manager Marty Corcoran said excess funds not covered by the grant would most likely come from the Special Business District, though that decision will ultimately be up to city council. The public works department will submit the application by May 4 and will wait to hear back before any further plans are made.
