Is Claire McCaskill's Support for Same-Sex Marriage a Sign of Things to Come?

Maplewood and Brentwood communities both faced issues related to rights for gays and lesbians last year.

Claire McCaskill announced her support for same-sex marriage on Sunday, the Washington Post reports. McCaskill, a Democratic U.S. senator from Kirkwood, made the announcement on her personal Tumblr blog.

"I have come to the conclusion that our government should not limit the right to marry based on who you love," McCaskill wrote. "Good people disagree with me. On the other hand, my children have a hard time understanding why this is even controversial. I think history will agree with my children."

In supporting same-sex marriage, McCaskill joins a growing list of politicians, including U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, a Republican from Ohio.

Same-sex marriage isn't a new issue to Maplewood and Brentwood.

The city of Maplewood added sexual orientation to its non-discrimination policy in Sept. 2012. The Maplewood Richmond Heights school district has similar protections in place.

In Oct. 2012, a Brentwood resident protested a book in the Brentwood Public Library that had same-sex marriage as a topic. The library board decided to keep the book.
