Maplewood Block Parties Moved to October

The city council didn't want another sweltering block party night.


Maplewood residents won't have to endure summer heat to get together with their block neighbors this year.

The Maplewood City Council voted to change the city's block party night from the Annual National Night Out, this year to be on August 7, to the St. Louis Region Night Out, which will be held on the first Tuesday in October.

The regional date was set by the area police chiefs to avoid the heat, .

"From my perspective," City Manager Marty Corcoran said in the meeting, "I can think of two things that maybe would be different (in October) than in August, besides the tempurature, school isn't in session, and you have a little more daylight in August.

"The temperature has been brutal the last two Augusts," he said. "Obviously the temperature would be a heck of a lot milder in October."
