Martini Sidewalk to Stay Open, Signs to Warn Motorists of Pedestrians in Revised QT PUD

An amendment to the QuikTrip PUD, passed by Maplewood voters on April 2, has passed.

After the May 14 Maplewood City Council meeting, where the amendment to the QuikTrip PUD received a 5-0 yes vote, with no discussion, it met resistance for the final vote at the May 28 meeting.

Mayor Jim White and Ward 3 Councilman Shawn Faulkingham were absent at the May 14 meeting.

The passed amendment will allow southbound traffic on Martini Drive as opposed to being blocked both ways, add signs for motorists to watch out for pedestrians, and eliminate the purchase of 2547 S. Big Bend and building a road between Martini Drive and Big Bend Boulevard for a cut-through street to Martini.

When it came up for the second reading on Monday, Mayor Jim White suggested tabling the amendment for a traffic study on Martini, but when Ward 2 Councilman Fred Wolf motioned to table, no one spoke up to second.

White said he was worried about student safety if Martini is open to students on the sidewalk.

“This is the right thing to do," Ward 3 Councilman Barry Greenberg said recently. "Its what the school district wants. We’ve been through this already. It’s really too late to revisit this."
