New Gas Lines for Maplewood's Greenwood Neighborhood

The project will take more than a year to finish.

Residents of Maplewood’s Greenwood neighborhood had better get used to seeing Laclede Gas trucks and backhoes around. They’ll be in the area for most of the coming year.

Gas line workers began a month ago to replace 15-20 thousand feet of aging cast iron main lines with plastic. The flexible plastic lines are less likely to crack.

It’s a “massive” project, Maplewood city public works director Anthony Traxler said.

“It’s an improvement to our infrastructure,” said Rob Arrol, Laclede Gas manager of internal communications. He said the work is being done in conjunction with the Wellington bridge replacement.

He said in the process, Laclede is also upping the pressure from low to intermediate. The higher pressure will ensure even delivery, he said.

Arrol and Traxler both said no one will see a change in their gas service throughout the project.

“They’ll still get that same safe, reliable service they’re use to,” Arrol said.
