Reader Asks: Conflict of Interest That City Banks Where Mayor is VP?

Some who answered the question on Patch said it is.

A reader asked the open question in Speak Out, in Maplewood-Brentwood Patch, “Do you think it is a conflict of interest for the City of Brentwood to bank at Eagle Bank where the mayor happens to be the top person at that branch?”

An email to Brentwood City Administrator Bola Akande confirmed that the city has a money market account with Eagle Bank, and also accounts at “several other places.” Pat Kelly is a vice president at Eagle Bank.

Several responded to the question. Here are some excerpts:

  • Yes. I would say this is another 'conflict of interest' and failure to keep "arms-length transactional distances" out of City Hall actions and awards and contracts.
  • ...we do not necessarily need an entirely new administration and boa, but we need transparency and populous agreements on major issues.
  • If that is true (and do not know it as a fact) as sometime city's use multiple banking locations. I think it would open up definite questions to be raised.

Do you think it is a conflict of interest that city has one account of several where Mayor Pat Kelly works?
