Upgrades Set for Maplewood Streets This Summer

Work is expected to begin next month.

Eight Maplewood streets will be repaved or reconstructed over the summer.

Maplewood City Council approved a $646,762 bid to improve Canterbury, Margarette, Madge, Lyle, Valley (between Bredell and Lohmeyer avenues), Williams (from McCready Ave. to Big Bend Blvd.), Walter (from James Street to Elm Ave.) and Gayola (from Roseland Terrace to Bellevue Ave.) avenues during a meeting on Tuesday night.

Construction is expected to begin next month. Residents will still have access to all roads because crews will close streets one side at a time, City Manager Marty Corcoran said.

Some streets in poor condition will be rebuilt entirely, said Anthony Traxler, public works director and assistant city manager. Roads like Canterbury, Williams and Gayola require base, curb, gutter and drive apron work, he said.

The other roads have a good base and only require an asphalt overlay, Traxler added.

Using asphalt for some streets was cheaper, which allowed the city to improve more streets this summer, noted Traxler in a city memo.
