Wellington Bridge is Open to Traffic

Maplewood folks will no longer need to cut through Shrewsbury to get to the River Des Peres Parkway and points south. A 10-foot wide sidewalk is new.

After 13 months the bridge connecting Maplewood/the Ellendale neighborhood and points south in St. Louis is open to traffic.

The Wellington Avenue Bridge over River Des Peres opened Thursday morning.

The $5.2 million project was supported by a public/private partnership, which cost the St. Louis only $500,000 of the total. Great Rivers Greenway contributed $500,000 and the rest was covered by a federal grant.

A new 10-foot wide sidewalk is an improvement over the old bridge. Great Rivers Greenway project manager Carrie Bundy said trails will eventually connect Forest Park and the Mississippi River.

Approximately 15,000 cars use the bridge daily.
