Widening of Manchester Road Could Continue West

Maplewood City Council offered preliminary approval of the expansion during Tuesday night's regularly-scheduled meeting.

The road construction on Manchester Road might continue in May 2014.

During Tuesday night's regularly-scheduled meeting, Maplewood City Council offered preliminary approval of a plan to widen Manchester Road from Bredell Avenue west to S. Hanley Road. It would be the third and final phase of construction on Manchester.

The current construction on Manchester—between Bredell and Big Bend Boulevard—is the second phase.

If the third phase is approved, Maplewood will pay for approximately 20 percent of the project ($556,800), while the state will foot 80 percent, which is approximately $2.8 million.

This project is a re-submittal of a prior application which required a 30 percent city match. The city is coming out ahead in the deal.

“In short, the council’s decision last August to withdraw the prior application and resubmit this past spring will result in an improved project and should save the city hundreds of thousands of dollars,” stated Anthony Traxler, director of the , in a city memo.

Adding antique lights along Manchester Road from Big Bend Boulevard to S. Hanley Road are budgeted in the third phase.

A final vote is scheduled at the next meeting on Oct. 11.
