Seeing Things Differently

A moment to see above the mess.

The other day I had the opporunity to fly over Saint Louis in the afternoon. This is a rare event for me as it is almost always dark when I land at Lambert Airport. This allowed me to see things just a bit differently.

The fall colors in Saint Louis City are beautiful. They paint a completely different picture of the land north of I-70 than you get from the ground. The arch glowed in the mid-afternoon sun, and the city seemed restful after the long baseball season.

I heard folks on the plane asking about the airstrip just to the east of Saint Louis, and I wanted to tell them about Parks Airport. I noticed how the highway swings wide to get to the Popular Street Bridge, and the urban forest on the site once known as Pruitt-Igoe popped out of the landscape now that I know the story.

The traffic danced throught the interchange at 70 & 170. It laughed at the fact that "big city" traffic would be all tail lights and horns.

Once on the ground, life shifted back to normal, and the energy and rush of the day consumed me. Too bad we don't have a chance to fly above our life once a day just for a moment to smile, reflect, enjoy, and think about what's next.
