Big Win Gives Brentwood Bench Some Playing Time

The bench players entered the game in the second half and made some plays for the Eagles.

The Brentwood starters created a commanding 60-0 halftime lead against the Missouri Military Academy on Friday night. The overwhelming lead let Eagles head coach Keith Herring insert some bench players in the second half.

And those players' assignments were no different.

"Our job was to keep the momentum, make some plays and play hard," Herring said. "The other guys — they practice hard too, so I wanted them to get a lot of time in."

Sophomore Marc Powells replaced junior Jordan Groth at quarterback. The Eagles' traditional three-headed rushing attack (Danny Lynch, Tyler Jones and Rekardo Owens) was replaced by a combination of four underclassmen: freshman Daron Starks, sophomore Jake Zivic, sophomore Devin Couch and freshman Austin Koster.

Starks had five carries for 54 yards and a touchdown; Zivic had four carries for 33 yards; Couch had four carries for 10 yards; and Koster had four carries for 11 yards.

One player who made an immediate impact was linebacker Nate Deimeike. The 5-foot-1, 110-pound freshman scooped up a fumble in the fourth quarter, prompting the Eagles fans to chant his name.

"Nate's fumble recovery was great - that was awesome. Nate's always around the ball," Herring said.

"It felt amazing," Deimeike said. "I was just in the game so much that I kept going and couldn't stop."

Deimeike has been a hard worker in practice but, as a freshman, hasn't made it into too many games yet. He isn't discouraged though.

"Don't give up," Deimeike said. "When you give up, that's when you lose and you dig a hole."

"He's going to grow and he's going to be a player," Herring said.
