Medals for Brentwood Debaters at State, Freshman in Kansas Relays
It was a weekend to remember for Brentwood High School and the Rivera family.
Brentwood students competed out of town and out of state this past weekend.
Five members of the debate team went to State competition on the Missouri State University campus in Coumbia, MO.
Debate coach Robyn Haug reported that David Rivera took sixth in Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking and Dallas Neely took second in United States Extemporaneous Speaking. Both are seniors.

"So we brought home two state finalists!" she said in an email to Patch.

She said senior Ellie Fitzgibbons, district champion in Prose Reading, was top 10 in the state. She missed a state medal by two spots.
Freshman Sophia Rivera, David's sister, was the only freshman to qualify in girls high school shot put and discus at the prestigious Kansas Relays at the University of Kansas, in Lawrence, KS.
Rivera's mother, Michelle Hassemer, reported that Rivera struggled a bit in shot put, with a 36'4" throw.
She finished eighth in discus with a 124'11" throw. Hassemer said medals were awarded to the top eight.
In Rivera's first high school meet she set new records for girls shot put and discus.
