Brentwood Football Hosts Lutheran South on Friday Night

The Lancers have a size advantage.

The (3-2) will play Lutheran South at home on Friday night. It’s a team that has had its ups and downs, and is looking forward to coming to Brentwood for a real test.

The Lancers are 1-4, coming off a tough 20-32 loss to Priory last week. Coach Chuck Faucette said it was a game they could have won. Before that, they beat Principia 41-14 at home for their homecoming game.

They lost to Lutheran North 23-35 in the last quarter. Faucette said they played North “right to the hilt. We were winning in the fourth quarter with six minutes left.” He said the game was a milestone for them because South hadn’t beat North in 27 years. It gave them some confidence.

Faucette is a first-year coach. He kept the offensive coordinator and has implemented a new defense. He said they have a lot of young players, especially on defense.

“Of course when you’re young you’re going to make mistakes, especially in the secondary coverages,” he said. “We’re plugging along. We started out slow.” Their first game was a 40-56 loss to Bishop DuBourg, then they lost to MICDS 7-48.

But the Lancers are trying to build the mentality to expect a win if they do the things they’re supposed to do. “It’s just not good enough to play well and not get the win,” he said. “I’m trying to change the mentality to expect a win.”

Junior quarterback Dalton Schumer leads the offense with 30 pass completions on 53 attempts. He also has 246 yards rushing. Four backs share rushing duties, each with total yards in the 200s. Watch out for senior Tuskani Figaro, who has seven touchdowns so far.

Brentwood coach Keith Herring watched film on the Lancers and said they’re big. “A lot bigger than us. Size-wise, they’ve got a lot of big kids out there,” he said.

The plan?

“We’re working on speed and quickness, and we’re going to have to take them low,” he said. Herring said the tempo has been up at practice this week.

Lutheran South’s offense is similar to Brentwood’s, “but with a little veer added to it,” Herring said. The Lancers run a 4-3 defense, which the Eagles saw last . All the Eagles are healthy.

Looking ahead: Next week's game slot looked like it was going to be open for Brentwood, because the Eagles had been scheduled to play Barat Academy, which canceled its football program.

The slot has been filled with a home game against North Callaway (1-4).
