Brentwood School District Considers Costs on Boys Hope Girls Hope Students

The school district said each student brings in money from the state, but there are costs as well.

The Brentwood School District has stated its position, at least the considerations, for whether or not students at a proposed Boys Hope Girls Hope group home could attend Brentwood schools.

The organization provides group homes for promising middle and high school students from homes that might keep them from succeeding. It would like to build a combined girls home/boys home/office on Madge Avenue.

The boys and girls would each live in separate, supervised homes.

When the organization held an informational meeting at St. Mary Magdalen, folks spoke out both for and against the group home.

The students could attend schools such as DeSmet or Ursuline Academy, or possibly Brentwood schools.

On Monday, the Brentwood School District sent out a letter to its email list regarding Boys Hope Girls Hope.

The state of Missouri contributes $497 per student per year to the school district, the letter stated.

Also, based on current textbook and supply costs, a new student entering in grade levels six through twelve would require $750-$950 in textbooks as one-time costs for each student at each grade level. The school district would be refunded with local taxes.

In order for any one of the students living at Boys Hope Girls Hope to attend Brentwood schools, the parents or legal guardians of student must apply to the board of education for what is known as a “waiver of proof of residency,” which, if granted, would allow the student to enroll in the Brentwood School District without paying tuition, according to the letter. Each waiver is considered on an individual basis.
