Brentwood Senior Aims for ESPN Anchor Spot

Brentwood senior Josh McGehee plans on a career in sports communications, working for a major network.

Listening to McGehee speak, it sounds like he's off to a good start. He speaks in complete paragraphs, ending each one on a positive note.

“I’ve loved every minute of my Brentwood high school career, and I’m going to miss it a lot,” he said. “I’m just happy that I can end it on a good note with baseball, because we’re going to be going for our third district championship in a row this spring.”

McGehee played soccer, basketball and baseball all four years at Brentwood.

“I can not, not play sports,” he said.

He enjoys baseball for the discipline.

“It’s a sport that I believe you must put the greatest work in,” McGehee said. “We have a great coaching staff that keeps us motivated every day. We’re one of the hardest working programs in the school.”

He said one of his toughest jobs is being Dylan McGehee’s brother.

This will be the third year the brothers have played baseball together. Josh is good, but Dylan is really good. He batted .594 last season and was named 3rd Team All-Metro.

“I couldn’t be more proud of him,” he said. “I’m happy to get the chance to play with my brother. Not many people get to do that.”

“In McGehee’s junior year, with friend Dallas Neely, he started Brentwood Sports Center, styled after ESPN Sports Center.

“I felt some of the sports programs in the school weren’t getting enough coverage. I just wanted to make sure everybody had a happy medium,” McGehee said.

The show is a 15-minute video clip that wraps up the week’s Brentwood High School sports action. They cover all sports with highlights, interviews, stats and schedules.

“I think the Brentwood Sports Center is a great step to gaining some early experience," he said. "To know how to work in front of the camera and know what to do and say,” he said.

He plans to start local and work his way up. “Even the great ones like Trey Wingo started on news Channel 5,” he said.

McGehee has been admitted to Bradley University next fall to study sports communications.

“I’m really excited to go to Bradley,” he said.
