Brentwood Sports Update: Girls Softball Starts Districts

Girls softball district playoffs begin on Wednesday, with Brentwood traveling to Valley Park.

The big news in high school sports this week is the beginning of the girls softball district playoffs, which for most teams will get underway Wednesday afternoon with games all over the state.

Brentwood will open the district tournament at Valley Park on Wednesday.

The Eagles softball team enters the tournament on a high note. The Eagles had a huge 17-7 win against district foe Life for Life Academy on Monday.

The Brentwood girls softball team was named the No. 5 seed in Class 2 District 5, and will take on No. 4 seed Valley Park in a first round playoff matchup on Wednesday.

The Eagles will go into that contest on a bit of a hot streak, having won six of their last seven, including the past three games.

Brentwood trailed Cleveland NJROTC 19-15 last Monday, before outscoring the Commanders 16-9 in the final three innings.

Junior Haley Holtgrieve had a career-high six hits and four RBIs for the Eagles that day, while senior teammates Shawn Durham (four hits and five RBIs) and Alaina Youngstrom (four hits and three RBIs) had big days at the plate as well.

The Brentwood boys soccer team got its second win of the season last week, with a 2-1 win over North County Tech on Monday.

This week, the Eagles have four games scheduled: a road game at McCluer on Monday; a home game against Maplewood on Tuesday; a home game against St. Pius X on Wednesday; and a game at Lemay Park against Hancock on Friday.

The Brentwood girls volleyball team raised its season record to 12-7-1, with a 3-1-1 performance at the Crossroads Tournament last weekend.

The Eagles’ only loss came at the hands of rival Maplewood, in a two-sets-to-one thriller, Saturday afternoon at Crossroads.

Those two teams will stage a highly anticipated rematch at Brentwood on Tuesday.

The Eagles will also face Hancock again, at Brentwood on Friday.

And lastly for Brentwood, the Eagles football team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, with a .

It was just a bad performance all the way around for Brentwood against the Lancers, as the Eagle offense managed just 170 total yards, with only six first downs, and two turnovers, while the Brentwood defense gave up nearly 500 yards to Lutheran South in what became a true blowout loss.

This week, the Eagles will aim to rebound against North Callaway in a home game scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday night.
