Eagles Look to Recover From Friday's Loss

Brentwood aims to rebound when it plays North Callaway next week.

Lutheran South was once a team that Brentwood could easily beat, but on Friday night, in front of Brentwood's homecoming crowd, this Lancers team had a different plan.

The Eagle’s three-game winning streak came to an abrupt end after they lost to the Lancers 8-46.

“They’re a good team, but we didn’t play up to our potential and just had a terrible night on defense,” Brentwood coach Keith Herring said. “Things didn’t happen for us. What more do I say?”

One stat is enough: Brentwood was stopped on nine of 10 possessions, while Lutheran South scored touchdowns on seven of 10 possessions.

Herring said he thought they could give them a game, and the Eagles occasionally flashed potential, but the Eagles were down quick and early.

“I don’t know what our mindset was,” Herring said.

Brentwood’s touchdown, which came four plays into the fourth quarter, was a 12-yard pass play from junior quarterback Jordan Groth to junior wide receiver Nick Featherston.

“It’s a play we’d been working on a few weeks. First time we used it in a game scenario,” Groth said.

“It was a pass off of one of our counter plays, and I saw Nick got behind the last defender and was heading toward the end zone,” Groth said. “I threw it up there, and he did all the work and caught the ball for me.”

The pass was perfectly thrown to beat the Lancer defensive back, as Featherston dove into the end zone.

But Groth admitted that “the intensity we had had the past few weeks just wasn’t there.” He did say that his team stayed out there and fought the whole game. “We didn’t give up and let our heads down,” Groth said.

Brentwood senior led the Eagles in rushing, gaining 46 yards on eight carries. Senior Danny Lynch was next, gaining 37 yards on seven carries. Junior went 27 yards on eight runs. Groth went 6-12 with 58 yards through the air.

On the other side of the field, Lancer senior Tuskani Figaro was a force on both sides of the ball. Not only did he account for a total of 199 offensive yards, he also had 10 solo tackles, four assists, a quarterback sack and an interception.

Lancers coach Chuck Faucette, in his first year as head coach, said he used the fact that the Eagles were on a winning streak as ammunition to fire up his team.

He said they knew they had to stop Brentwood’s running game. “They’re going to try to run a double wing, and we’re going to try to get them out of that,” he said. “We did a good job early, and our offense got rolling, and our big man got some things done.”

Herring told his team that the Eagles would work hard to start improving the next morning.

“We’ve got to turn the page, we’ve to to improve,” he said. “That’s our goal tomorrow. We’re going to get better starting tomorrow.”

Groth agreed. “We’ve got some work to do,” he said. “We still have three important games.” (North Callaway, Grandview and Principia)

The loss leaves Brentwood at 3-3 as the Eagles look ahead to playing North Callaway (2-4) at home on Friday night. The game is a late schedule, filling the spot where Barat Academy had been, but Barat canceled its football season.
