Free Concerts Near Clayton in September 2012: Handel, Gershwin, Schubert

The two events near Clayton are open to the public, the music department at Washington University in St. Louis announced.

Two free concerts planned in September at Washington University in St. Louis will showcase the music of Handel, Gershwin, Schubert and others, its music department announced in an email update.

The first event happens at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12 with guitarist Vincent Varvel and soprano Stella Markou. Music by Purcell, Handel, Granados, Villa-Lobos, Gershwin and Martin Kennedy will be featured. The concert will take place in the Goldberg Formal Lounge at the Danforth University Center.

At 3 p.m. Sept. 16, tenor Kyle Erdos-Knapp and pianist Gail Hintz will perform at Holmes Lounge in Ridgley Hall. Franz Schubert's "Die schöne Müllerin, Op. 25, D. 795" will be performed, and a reception will follow. The event is co-sponsored by the department of Germanic languages and literatures and will be introduced by Professor Paul Michael Lützeler.
