Mark Twain Elementary Named A National School of Character

After twice being recognized as a Missouri School of Character, the Brentwood school gets the national nod.

Wednesday, the Character Education Partnership, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization, named Mark Twain Elementary, a 2011 National School of Character (NSOC).

Mark Twain was recognized for its exceptional performance in meeting standards of excellence established by the 11 Principles of Effective Character Education. Mark Twain is one of 43 schools nationwide recognized in 2011.

The school was named a Missouri School of Character twice in the past, and this is its third attempt at applying for the national recognition, said Mark Twain principal Karen Smith.

"We've been on this journey for about nine years," she said, "looking at creating an environment where the kids take an active role in leadership, where their voices are heard, where their behaviors and their academics are part of who they are, so they take pride in who they are and their school."

She said the school's behavioral referrals are down 90 percent. Academically, Mark Twain was a Blue Ribbon School in 2009, which means it was in the top 364 schools out of the nation. Schools in 30 states participated in the Blue Ribbon Schools competition.

"You expect more from them, and they surpass your expectations every single time," Smith said. "Whether we're successfull academically, or we are caring, all has to do with our character ecucation programs that we have."

"Schools of character are places that bring out the best in everyone--students, staff, and even parents and community members," said NSOC Director Lara Maupin. "This year, a record number of schools demonstrated school cultures that enable all their students to thrive socially and academically. These schools went through a very rigorous evaluation process and we are thrilled to recognize their achievements and tell their stories."

The Character Education Partnership will honor the 2011 National Schools of Character at the National Forum on Character Education, to be held in San Francisco in October. At the ceremony, Mark Twain will receive the award, a banner, and a check for $1,000. After being named a NSOC, schools serve as models and mentors, helping other educators transform their school cultures and improve academics and behavior.

Smith said the school will celebrate on the last day of school. Parents will be invited an hour before dismissal, and everyone will eat ice cream. Smith said she also has some special surprises to give out, from "Coach Smith."
