Mayor, Aldermen Recognize Brentwood Art Students

The Brentwood Board of Aldermen declared May as Youth Art Month during a meeting on Monday night.

Several Brentwood students were recognized during Monday night's Brentwood Board of Aldermen meeting for hanging their art in city hall.

The board declared May as Youth Art Month in Brentwood and Mayor Pat Kelly honored 17 students from and elementary schools and :

Since 1993, city hall has functioned as an art gallery for Brentwood students. The program beautifies the building while giving the young artists a place to showcase their talent, Kelly said.

"Every year, it's been the tradition in the City of Brentwood to pass out a certificate to some of our art students," Kelly said.

Lee Wynn, who taught and coached in the school district for 33 years, read the mayor's proclamation out loud:

Whereas, the Youth Art Month is a proven, effective art advocacy plan and it is an opportunity to explain that art is not a frill but an essential for the full development of all children; and

Whereas, Youth Art Month is an opportunity for teachers to exhibit the creative, appealing and interesting artwork of their students; and

Whereas, the dedicated art teachers of the Brentwood School District: Tim Rempel-Brentwood Middle and High schools, Jamie Davis-Brentwood Middle and Mark Twain schools and Jean Buschart-Brentwood Middle and McGrath schools, not only celebrate Youth Art Month in May but advocate art creativity all school year; and

Whereas, these teachers initiated and have maintained an art gallery at Brentwood City Hall since the fall of 1993 and the pictures displayed have brought pleasure to many; and

Whereas, it is fitting for the City of Brentwood to recognize the interests of the Brentwood School District art teachers and to recognize the artistic ability of the Brentwood art students.

Now, therefore, I, Pat Kelly, Mayor of the City of Brentwood, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2011 as Youth Art Month.
