McGrath Teacher Recognized for Outdoor Education

Fourth-grade teacher Lisa Hastings was surprised during a school assembly on Tuesday.

While the students and staff assembled in the gym for a presentation on good manners, a bigger surprise was in store for one special teacher. On Tuesday, Office Max recognized fourth-grade teacher Lisa Hastings for her service to the community in the “Day Made Better Program”.

Hastings was nominated by her principal Kathleen Behrmann. The fine people at Office Max presented Hastings with a bouquet of flowers and a gift box full of office and school products. In addition, the business collected more than $1,700 of locally-donated supplies to give to Hastings.

She was recognized for her year-round service to the outdoor education program at McGrath. McGrath has nationally-recognized garden spaces to promote an understanding of life science and horticulture in the elementary years.

The living classroom project was started by retired teacher Becky Bopp. Hastings took over the garden and expanded its usage. Mrs. Hastings is an example of the dedicated teaching staff at McGrath Elementary School who make each day better.
