McGrath's Roof Now Waterproof

The roof was fixed over the summer.

When students at  begin class on Tuesday, they'll enter a school with a roof that no longer leaks.

The roof over the office and music room was replaced over the summer, said David Faulkner, assistant to the superintendent.

Principal Kathleen Behrmann said she’s happy that the teachers can concentrate entirely on teaching now, and not worry about water from above.

When McGrath Elementary was built in 1957, it was a destination for architecture buffs, Behrmann said.

It was designed by Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum, a St. Louis architecture firm now known as HOK. Each classroom had large windows that opened to green space and was organized into pods. A flat roof with sky lights added to the natural light.

Flat roofs, though, usually come with leaks, she said. She’s grateful it’s fixed.
