MICDS Sneaks Past MRH in Overtime Thriller
Two of the area's top small-school teams clash in Maplewood, and it was high stakes and big crowds for the first game of the season.
When hosted MICDS on Friday night, the stands were packed and overflowing on both the Blue Devils' blue side and the Rams' red side.
It was no surprise that it was an exciting, hard-fought game. MICDS scored first, on its second possession, and finally won the game, 36-35 in overtime.
The Blue Devils matched the Rams at 7-7 in the first half, 14-14 and 28-28 in the second, and finally took a 35-28 lead in overtime. But MRH lost the lead, and the game, on the final MICDS overtime play on the final, win-or-lose play.
The Rams gave the ball to their Division-1 recruit Michael Scherer (accepted to Missouri), who took it in from the two-yard-line for a game-ending two-point conversion.
A 29-yard field-goal attempt by MRH senior John Barron that went wide would have put the Devils up 31-28 with 10 seconds left in regulation time. It was Barron’s only miss of the night.
Five touchdowns by MRH freshman Elijah Keely was a nice surprise for the Blue Devils. He finished with 19 carries for 161 yards. Junior quarterback Kahlid Hagens was 11-for-20 passing, and picked up 88 rushing yards on 13 carries.
MRH will play at home again next Friday night, against Brentwood, which also lost on Friday, to Crystal City, 35-21.
