Sports Update: MRH, Brentwood Football Guaranteed Playoff Spots

With one week left in the season, both teams have clinched spots in the postseason.

The and football teams find themselves in similar boats heading into the final week of the regular season this week.

MRH, one of the state’s most exciting teams, is in the most enviable position, having already clinched itself a spot in the state playoffs, the district championship, and a first round home game, with and the last two weeks.

The Devils (7-2) will finish out regular season play with a game in Crystal City, MO, against Lift for Life Academy (2-7).

Brentwood earned its spot in the playoffs last Friday over Grandview.

The Eagles can now claim the outright district championship, and get a home playoff game, if they can defeat Principia when the teams square off this Saturday at Prin’s John Jamerson Stadium.

Earning that particular home playoff game would seem particularly desirable, because the winner would avoid a first-round matchup against Maplewood, while the loser would face the Devils in the first round on Wednesday, November 2.

Maplewood Richmond Heights, Brentwood soccer struggle

The MRH and Brentwood soccer teams both did more losing than winning last week, while making some of their final tune-ups for district playoffs, which begin next week throughout the state.

Brentwood has completed its boys soccer regular season. The Eagles will be practicing throughout the week and getting ready for their district playoff opener against John Burroughs at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning.

MRH has a full slate of games this week, before beginning district play next week against Cleveland NJROTC.

The Blue Devils will host Hancock on Tuesday and take a trip to University City on Thursday, before closing out the regular season with a final home game against Crossroads Prep on Friday.

All three of those matches are set for 4 p.m., while next Tuesday’s district opener is slated with a 6:15 p.m. start time.

Other notes

Finally, winter sports practices begin next week, with basketball, wrestling, and other team tryouts beginning on Monday, October 31.
