MRH Sweeps District Football With Win Over Lift for Life

Devils score touchdowns in five different ways in blowout victory of St. Louis charter school.

The football team finished off the 2011 regular season and clinched the MSHSAA Class 2 District 4 championship in grand style Thursday night, with a whopping 75-6 win over the Lift for Life Academy of St. Louis.

The Blue Devils, who are now 8-2 this season and remain the highest-ranked St. Louis-area team in , earned themselves a berth in the state playoffs, which begin on Wednesday, November 2, and the right to host that game, which will be against the runner-up team from District 3.

The Class 2 District 3 championship will be settled on Saturday, when Principia High School hosts Brentwood at 1 p.m.

The winner of that game will get a home playoff game next Wednesday, while the loser will be served up to Maplewood, which is on a roll.

At least no team playing right now seems capable of matching the output MRH gave out on Thursday, a 75-point outburst that was easily the most points the Devils scored in a game this season.

In fact, MRH scored in nearly every way possible against Lift For Life, with five touchdown runs, two touchdown passes, two kickoff returns for scores, an interception return, and a fumble recovery.

Freshman running back Elijah Keely did the most damage. He rushed for three touchdowns on the night, while junior quarterback Kahlid Hagens accounted for three scores of his own, with two touchdown passes and a touchdown run.

Other MRH players who had big nights included senior Kashon Hagens, who caught one of Kahlid Hagens’ touchdown passes and scored on the fumble recovery; Kavon Thomas, who returned an interception and caught the other touchdown pass; and Alvin Garvin and Robert Burse, who each returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

The only blemish on the night for MRH, came when the defense allowed Lift For Life’s Treavon Minner to throw a 7-yard touchdown pass to teammate DeMarkus Reid.
