Clean-up activities are planned at VFW Post 3500 in Richmond Heights.

Students from will mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks by volunteering with a community organization, the school announced Wednesday in a news release.

Residents of both Richmond Heights andMaplewood are invited to work on projects involving painting, cleaning, building and planting from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 11 at . The event is called Serving Those Who Serve.

"It's an opportunity for our kids to serve the community and honor living history," Principal Kevin Grawer stated in the release.

This summer, students began seeking donations of paint, brushes, cleaning supplies, landscaping materials and money to purchase those materials. They are part of a new communications arts class called Cornerstone Culture. The class explores stewardship, leadership, scholarship and citizenship, which are the cornerstones of the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District, the release states.

Businesses such as  in Clayton and  in Maplewood have pledged support for the project.

"The volunteerism and generosity of the MRH High School community will not only help VFW Post 3500 better serve the community but will also further the VFW's mission to serve fellow veterans," stated VFW Post Commander Brandan Mueller in the release.

Businesses and people interested in participating may do so by contacting teacher Patrice Bryan at 314-644-4401 or p.bryan@mrhsd.k12.mo.us.
