MRH Struggles, But Gets Road Win at Potosi

Freshman running back Elijah Keely leads the Blue Devils to a 28-14 victory.

POTOSI — Freshman Elijah Keely was back on the field for, and again was the leading Blue Devils rusher.

Coach Brandon Gregory said Keely was the only Blue Devil to step up in what he called an “ugly” road win over the Potosi Trojans.

MRH had a slow start for the second time in three games, but managed a 28-14 win over the conference foe.

“Until we come out slinging first, we’re going to have to fight the whole four quarters,” Gregory said. “We’re just going to have to keep digging ourselves out of a hole.”

MRH kicked off to start the game, then held the Trojans in four downs, but couldn’t get going in the rest of first quarter.

A six-play possession starting from their own 20 in the second quarter resulted in a 6-0 lead, but Potosi evened the score seconds before the first half clock ran out.

MRH scored on a Khalid Hagens 23-yard pass play to Cortland Brooks, and a 50-yard Keely run in the third quarter. A Hagens to Brooks pass in the fourth quarter followed by a two-point conversion finished the scoring for the game.

“We knew coming in we had to bring our A-game to even stay on the same field as those guys,” Potosi coach Mark Casey said.

“Those guys are fast and aggressive and strong, and they’re a good football team.”

Potosi may have felt good about hanging with MRH for a half, but there were some hanging heads walking out of the visitor locker room after the game.

“A win is a win, but they better have thick skin tomorrow when we watch film, because they have a lot to learn from,” Gregory said.

A longer game story with more quotes and notes from the game will be posted tomorrow morning on Patch.
