Sustainability Camp Described in MRH Student Presentations

Five Maplewood Richmond Heights students attended Camp Snowball in Tucson, AZ, this summer.

Several students attended a camp this summer to learn about sustainable living.

Janai Robertson, Curtis BoClair and Marianne Hicks were among the five MRH students at Camp Snowball in Tucson, AZ. They spoke during . School board secretary Brooke Rintoul, who also attended the camp, introduced them.

MRH is "known throughout the nation" and is becoming known internationally for its sustainability work, Rintoul said. The district at its and managed by students, among other initiatives.

Robertson asked the board to reflect on the image of a sinking boat. Several of its occupants are bailing out water, while others aren't. The image reflects people's ideas about sustainability, she said. She noted the people who aren't helping out.

"What they fail to realize is, we're all in the same boat here," Robertson said. Among the things she learned at camp: When it comes to sustainability, participate as a learner.

BoClair said MRH students developed a page of questions about the . They also proposed that a board be created to manage the project. He said he loves the fact that they were able to make the commons a student-led effort.

Hicks said the goal of sustainability is to use surrounding people, plants and animals to make the planet better for future generations. She said people need to start treating the earth as it should be treated, and she handed out copies of a guide to sustainable seafood consumption.

Businesses funded the trip to Camp Snowball.
