Williams is MRH Football's Mr. Versatility

junior Wes Williams is, above all else, versatile.

He’s been playing football since he was 6 years old, mostly as a quarterback. This proved to be a good thing last season when he stepped in for the injured Kahlid Hagens in the .

Now he’s done the same thing this year. Williams has shifted from linebacker to running back. In the second game of the season, against Brentwood, Williams stepped in for running back Elijah Keely and scored his .

“I was always taught to be able to play more than one position,” Williams said. “I’ve played quarterback since I was little, but I was always taught to play everything else.”

“You look at the Kahlids, the Kashons, but believe it or not, Wes is our Mr. Versatile,” MRH coach Brandon Gregory said.

“From inside linebacker to outside linebacker, quarterback, tight end, full back, I mean, he does it all,” Gregory said.  “He’s an intelligent kid. He lacks speed that other kids have, so he finds a way to get the job done.”

Williams said that his favorite sport is football because it’s the sport he plays best. But, he also likes basketball, which he also plays for MRH. He said he really likes baseball, but last spring he chose to train with the track team to get faster for football. He’s been lifting weights since March, and continues to do it, he said.

Williams hopes to continue with four more years of football after MRH. In terms of where that may be, or the size of the college, that really doesn’t matter to him as long as he’s playing football.

He mentioned the possibility of playing in the NFL, but said whatever the future holds he wants it to be in sports in some way. “I would like to be around sports, like a sports broadcaster, coach, trainer, something like that,” he said.

So far in 2011, in addition to his three TDs, Williams has 12 tackles, six assists and one sack, as noted on STLhighschoolsports.com.

It looks like Williams will be filling in at running back again against Potosi on Friday night. Just like last year, when he took over at quarterback, and like last week, he’ll be ready to go.

“Strapped up, ready,” Williams said.
