Football Brawl, Ejections Leads to Shortened MRH Game

The Cleveland bench emptied on top of two Maplewood Richmond Heights players.

Maplewood Richmond Heights won its first-round district game over Cleveland NJROTC by forfeit, following a fight that culminated with too many Cleveland players ejected to finish the game.

With MRH ahead 21-0 and 2:56 left to play in the first quarter, two MRH players tackled a Cleveland runner near the Cleveland bench. Immediately, nearly every Cleveland player from the bench piled on. Every one was ejected.

The game was delayed while school representatives, game officials, coaches, and Maplewood Police officers conferred on the field. It was called when it was determined that Cleveland didn’t have enough remaining players to continue.

MRH coach Rich Nixon is not naming those two MRH players at the bottom because he said after the game film is reviewed he will probably appeal the ejection.

They were in a “hostile environment,” and were fighting to get out, he said.

“I thought our kids handled the situation very well,” Nixon said. “I think we had one penalty in the 10 minutes we got to play, and the field was riddled with flags.”

Before the game was called, Wes Williams scored all three MRH touchdowns.

“He was off to a blazing start,” Nixon said. “It’s unfortunate things ended the way they did. We definitely wanted to play ball.”

Kicker Will Wadsworth was 3 for 3 on extra points.

MRH plays Lutheran North (3-7) Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. at MRH in the second round of district playoffs.

Tip: next time you write a story with a score - please indicate which team is which... "With the score 21-0 and 2:56 left to play in the first quarter" -- who was winning 24-0? (i later figured it out - but it is critical to mention the teams in a score)

It's been fixed. Thanks for that, Mitch.

I dont think you needed to ask who was winning. Do you think Cleveland would start a brawl, jeopardizing their game and cause a forfeit if they were up 3 TD's???
Mitch Aunger October 27, 2012 at 02:20 pm
I beg to differ... in the heat of the moment, anyone can get overly upset and do wild things. And it is just good practice to properly identify which teams have which score

I hope to god there weren't any gay gerbils involved in the melee.

Isn't the home team score always first?

I was just thinking, if you happen to see something.....like the sign in front of City Hall, or theRead More sign in Schnuck's parking lot....regarding something going on in Brentwood, now you can click on the "Post" board at the top of the page, and let people know what is happening in Brentwood. We have the new format so we can now post whatever we want. Just click and post. Anyone can do it too.

I doubt this discrepancy you think exists is because the editors have more of a connection toRead More Maplewood. I imagine it is because Maplewood officials and Chamber of Commerce members send press releases to the editors regarding upcoming events and news items. If you want your local community to have more of a presence in the Patch, I suggest you contact the proper officials in Brentwood and urge them to send such notices. Self-promotion for a community is a good thing, although in the case of Brentwood Days and other iconic Brentwood events, it was my understanding that the city didn't want it publicized and preferred it to be a smaller event.
