Brentwood All-Star Kevin Smith is Grandson of an All-Star

Smith's grandfather, Jim Smith, played in the St. Louis Muni League all-star game in 1947.

When pitcher, Kevin Smith, throws in the Smiles League Coaches' Choice High School Seniors All-Star baseball game on June 16, he’ll have a fan in the stands who played in a similar game 65 summers ago.

Kevin Smith’s grandfather, Jim Smith, was a catcher for the South team in the 1947 St. Louis Municipal League All-Star Game. The North played the South in the Muni League all-star game. Jim Smith went to Southwest High School.

The Muni League All-Star game was played at Sportsman’s Park. Smith hit two doubles, and his team, the South, beat the North 9-7 in that 1947 game, Bob Smith said.

“Kevin has a heritage playing in this all-star game,” his father, Bob Smith, said.

"It was a fair-played game," Jim Smith told Patch by phone on Sunday, the day of the 2012 game announcement.

"(Kevin) is fortunate to have the size," Jim Smith said of his grandson, "and he works hard." Jim saw Kevin pitch several home games this year.

Jim wore a souvenir belt buckle in the 1947 game. His son Bob brought it with him to show around at the at Busch Stadium on Sunday.

Kevin Smith will pitch for Greenville College, a Division 3 school in Illinois, the next four years. His father, Bob Smith, said he considered some Division 2 schools but Greenville was the best fit.
