Brentwood Alumni Reunite With Former Classmates, Basketball

Before the current team of Brentwood Eagles took to the court against Barat Academy on Friday night, two teams of graduates clashed in .

Former teachers, graduates, friends and family cheered from the stands while 27 alumni—12 graduates on a 1980s team and 15 on a 1990s team—fought in a close game.

"We just wanted to find a way to reconnect with guys at Brentwood High School," said Duane Young, a 1982 graduate who helped organize the game. "We're just ecstatic with the turnout."

The '80s team held the lead for most of the first half, but the '90s team grabbed a 16-15 lead at half and never let it go. But the '80s team almost stole a last-second win.

Down by four with 34 seconds left in the game, '67 alumnus Ed Wright, who was playing for the '80s team*, stole a pass and fed it down the court to a teammate for a quick two points.

The '90s team held a 32-30 lead with 19 seconds left, but a foul sent '90s alumnus Kevin Kullum* to the free throw line. Kullum scored one free throw to give the '90s team a three point lead.

With seven seconds left in the game, '80s alumnus Tyrone Dean passed in the ball from out of bounds. Chris Jones shot the potentially equalizing three-pointer from the corner but missed the basket as the buzzer sounded. The '90s team won 33-30.

"We spotted some of those guys 15 years and we still held our own," said David Jones, a 1982 graduate, after the game.

He thanked assistant principal Ed Johnson for his help in organizing and hosting the game.

"We thought it would be a great opportunity to get together... while we're still young and healthy," Jones said. "We had a good time."
