Brentwood Booster Club to Support Eagles Football

At last year’s football banquet, coach Keith Herring suggested a booster club for the team.

Bill Koster, the father of sophomore player Austin Koster, said he volunteered to head up the newly-formed Brentwood Booster Club.

He said the main objective of the club is to take care of the safety of the team.

“Because school budgets are cutting back, there’re a lot of things out there, like having trainers at every football game, especially at away games,” he said. It's the home team's responsibility to provide a trainer, in case of injury, but it doesn't always happen, Koster said.

The club also plans on providing meals for the players before and after games.

Lots of good volunteers stepped up for the club, Koster said.

“Kristin Ruff is the vice president, she’s Jordan Ruff’s mother, Gary Nelson is our treasurer, my wife Shannon is the secretary, and Ken Jones is on the committee, Suzan Sappington, so we’ve got a lot parents that have stepped up right away,” he said.

Koster said they plan on at least one fundraiser activity a quarter. He said the club is incorporating so the members can be involved in taking donations, and they plan on advertising too.

He said currently banner ads aren’t allowed at games, and they plan on going to the school board to see about having that changed. They’ll advertise in the program, and possibly have a souvenir program at the end of the year to sell more ads.

The booster club is not just for high school parents. Parents of 6th, 7th and 8th grade Jr. Eagles will be involved too.

“Although a lot them don’t have the expenses we have, they still have needs,” he said. “Plus it gets the younger parents involved, so when us old people decide to move on we can hand the baton to the younger parents.”

Koster updated the team’s summer activities.

“Last weekend they had a 7-on-7 tournament in Carbondale, and we didn’t have a single senior on the team, either due to injury or other commitments,” he said. “We had two juniors, and the other nine kids were freshmen and sophomores and they did very well.

“They certainly didn’t win, but they played with some of the bigger schools, including some of the 5A schools, so I was impressed,” Koster said, “considering we didn’t have our starting quarterback and our starting receiver.”

He said they’re working hard with conditioning and weightlifting.

“It’s a very young team,” he said. “We lost a lot in graduation, but I’ll think they’ll compete.”
