Brentwood Qualifies 9 For State Wrestling Tournament

Two freshmen from Brentwood and one from Maplewood Richmond Heights qualified for the state meet.

Nine Brentwood wrestlers qualified for the state tournament at the district tournament on Saturday. That number nine is a record for the Eagles, coach Roy Hughes said. The top four finishers in each weight class at the district tournament qualify for the state meet.

Brentwood was third overall in the tournament, with 136.5 points. Maplewood Richmond Heights was 10th, with 56. Whitfield won with 223.5 points.

"We got what every coach wants, which is to peak at the right time," coach Roy Hughes said.

He said he was surprised to have freshmen, Dexter Romos at 106, and Gary Silerio at 120, qualify. Silerio was down in points in his final match but ended up winning with a pin.

Senior, David Rivera took second at Districts. He's returning to Columbia for the third year. He finished in fourth at last year's state meet.

Maplewood Richmond Heights qualified two for State. The Blue Devils took seven to Districts.

Coach Cory Reichert said he wasn't surprised to see freshman Romell Person qualify.

"He had a couple years experience in the youth level," Reichert said. "By his size and his work ethic, I knew he could do it. I knew the kid was going to go for it."

It will be senior, Jonas Tiggs' third trip to the state tournament.

"I think both of them have a chance to place, and I expect them to," Reichert said.

MRH wrestlers, freshman, Ronald Stewart-Gibson at 113 pounds, freshman Treyvon Williams at 126, and sophomore Zach Seibert at 170, were all one match away from qualifying.

MRH's Romell Person lost his first match but won his second. He's now in wrestlebacks and can do as well as third. Jonas Tiggs and Lucas Jones won their first round matches, and are in a straight line to the championship match. Mykell lost, then won, so he's in wrestlebacks.

I was just thinking, if you happen to see something.....like the sign in front of City Hall, or theRead More sign in Schnuck's parking lot....regarding something going on in Brentwood, now you can click on the "Post" board at the top of the page, and let people know what is happening in Brentwood. We have the new format so we can now post whatever we want. Just click and post. Anyone can do it too.

I doubt this discrepancy you think exists is because the editors have more of a connection toRead More Maplewood. I imagine it is because Maplewood officials and Chamber of Commerce members send press releases to the editors regarding upcoming events and news items. If you want your local community to have more of a presence in the Patch, I suggest you contact the proper officials in Brentwood and urge them to send such notices. Self-promotion for a community is a good thing, although in the case of Brentwood Days and other iconic Brentwood events, it was my understanding that the city didn't want it publicized and preferred it to be a smaller event.
