Olympic Volleyball Inspires MRH Team

Coach Cheryl Carmon expects to defend their District title "with authority."

This year the volleyball team has some extra added inspiration: watching the U.S. National Team play in the Summer Olympics.

Maplewood Richmond Heights head volleyball coach Cheryl Carmon said she’s glad the Olympics happened right before this, and the women are doing so well.

“The first day we came back, I said, ‘What have you seen that they do that we don’t do?’ and we came up with a whole list of things that we’re going to be working on, just to up our play.”

What excites Carmon most this season is that they have a freshman team.

“We have had 35 to 40 girls playing volleyball in the past, and we have it again this year, so they got us a freshman coach,” she said.

The freshman, JV and varsity teams all have full schedules this year.

She said she expects her varsity team, led by eight seniors, “to defend our District title with authority.”
