Sports Roundup: MRH, Brentwood Teams in Full Swing

The busy fall sports season is here, and several teams from Brentwood and Maplewood Richmond Heights are in action.

The 2011 fall sports season is now in full swing, and several teams from Brentwood and Maplewood Richmond Heights are playing extremely busy schedules.

The MRH girls volleyball team is 2-4 heading into the third week of this season. Senior setter Brittney Poole has gotten off to a good start. She leads the Blue Devils with 39 assists and 15 service aces.

MRH’s top hitters thus far have been sophomore Mariah Russell, who leads the team with 22 kills, and senior Amber Sinclair, who’s second on the team with 19 kills.

This week, the Devils have three matches scheduled. On Tuesday, they’ll host Valley Park, they’ll play at Normandy on Wednesday and on Friday MRH hosts Brentwood. All three matches are set to begin at 5 p.m.

The MRH boys soccer team got its first win of the season last Saturday with an 8-2 defeat of Canton (Mo).

Senior John Barron had a hat trick, scoring three goals and adding an assist while fellow senior Sam Martin scored twice. It was easily the Blue Devils’ best performance of the season.

MRH is now 1-4, and will look to improve on that mark with three games on the schedule this week. MRH will play Valley Park on Tuesday at the Anheuser-Busch Soccer Center in Fenton.

Then on Thursday, the Devils will play Metro at Gateway Middle School in St. Louis, before finishing off their week with a home matchup against rival Brentwood.

The Brentwood boys soccer team got off to a rough start with three losses last week.

The Eagles took two rough defeats against Metro (5-2 on Sept. 3), and Kennedy (8-1 on Sept. 7), but played their best match of the early season last Tuesday when they took O’Fallon-Christian to overtime.

Unfortunately, Brentwood couldn’t hold off a late O’Fallon-Christian charge and lost that match as well, 2-1.

This week, the Eagles have two matches scheduled. They’ll play Bayless at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m., then will close the week with a game at rival MRH at 4 p.m.

The Brentwood girls softball team is also winless so far this season.

The Eagles are 0-3, with losses against Hancock, Valley Park, and Metro. But they will aim to get into the win column this week with road games against McCluer South-Berkeley and Clayton (Thursday at 4:15 p.m.). Clayton is one of the hottest teams in the area and began this week with a 7-2 record.

The Brentwood girls volleyball team won its season opener on Sept. 7, when it took a straight set match against Jennings by scores of 25-16 and 25-21.

This week, the 1-1 Eagles will play three matches, beginning on Tuesday with a trip to Bayless. That will be followed by a Wednesday home game against Clayton (5 p.m.), and a Friday road match at Maplewood at 5:15 p.m.

The Brentwood girls field hockey team started 1-1, but suffered three losses last week to fall to 1-4 on the season.

Last Thursday’s 2-1 loss to Oakville was especially maddening for the Eagles, who had scored late in the second half to tie before letting one slip away in overtime.

This week, the Eagles will get two more chances to get back on the winning track.

On Monday, Brentwood will play at Rockwood Summit before closing out its week with a home contest against University City. Both matches are at 4 p.m.
