VIDEO: MRH's King, Liska Receive Athletic Scholarships

Eric Liska will run track at Hutchinson Community College while Tony King will play football at William Penn.

Two more Maplewood Richmond Heights students have signed on the line to continue playing sports at the college level through scholarships.

On Wednesday, Eric Liska signed with Hutchinson Community College to participate in track and Tony King signed to play football at William Penn University.

Liska, who was part of three MRH Class 2 state track championships, ran in the winning 4x200-meter relay and 4x400 relay, and also placed second in the 400-meter run at . He ran track for four years at MRH.

Liska would like to use Hutchinson to train and become faster, then move up to a Division 1 school.

“They list a long list of track people,” he said. “They got 60,000 kids there, and I think I’m going to be with competitive people that I know can push me, and it’s going to get me to the D-1 level.”

King said he thought he was going to be playing basketball in college, but MRH football and track coach Brandon Gregory changed his mind. King, a wide receiver, has classmate Nick Coulter to thank for the opportunity. Coulter showed a William Penn coach a YouTube highlight video of King, and the university gave him a call.

“So ever since that day they’ve been calling me and wanting me to come,” King said. He said he’ll spend the summer weight training and running.

“Based off their hard work and their performances, and coming from a winning program, actually schools came out and found them,” Gregory said. He said Hutchinson is where he played junior college football.

Great idea to link to King's YouTube highlights, Ryan. Cool to jump back to that football season for a minute.
